Online Poker Room Advice for Starting Players

In This Page:

There are many strategies that people use when playing in online poker rooms and there are many poker room tips to be learned by the novice player. We will focus primarily on Texas holdem poker tips. These poker room tips are primarily for dealing with the nuances of online play rather than poker room tips for face-to-face play. The poker room tips would be slightly different if they were for face-to-face games instead of online poker rooms.

One of the best poker room tips that I can offer is to be patient with your game play. This is true whether playing in online poker rooms or face-to-face, but even more so with Internet play. Poker room tips tell us that players are more apt to go all in and make seemingly silly bets when playing online because if they lose they are not embarrassed for making a bad move. Poker room tips suggest that if you, as the novice player, remain patient and wait until you have a very good hand you are more likely to win. Along these same lines, other poker room tips include not falling for the “all in” every hand strategy that some players will try. Another of the poker room tips is to not think that people will not bluff just because you are online.

Another one of the best poker room tips is to not “go on tilt”. Going on tilt, as it is known, means to get angry with an opponent and make bad decisions, or to get angry at the cards/luck you have been getting. Poker room tips tell us that making bets out of anger or frustration is just a bad idea that causes people to lose their poker hands. Going on tilt is detrimental to your play, especially when playing in online poker rooms. Imagine that you are playing face to face with 10 people who are at least cordial to one another during the game. Take these same 10 players and put them behind the safety of the Internet anonymity and they may behave quite differently. Poker room tips tell us that others will insult your playing style or simply try to get you to make a bad bet and that it is more common in online poker room games. I cannot stress enough the importance of poker room tips that tell you to avoid going on tilt.

Poker room tips for online play also include that you make a decision and act quickly on that decision, since there are usually time limits on how long you can take for each turn. The poker room tips that tell you to know the odds of a winning hand are very true. That way you do not “chase” hands that are not likely to come. This is also one of the general Texas holdem poker tips. Texas holdem poker tips describe chasing cards as almost having a good hand and you stay in and continue to call the bets in hopes of getting that hand. For example, lets say you have a 9, 10 off suit. The flop comes with a 6,8, and Jack. All you need for the straight is the 7. There are still 10 people playing in the game. Should you call a large bet in hopes that one of the last two cards is the 7 that you need? Texas holdem poker tips tell us no, you should not. Consider the odds of actually getting that 7. There are only four 7’s in the deck and with 10 players playing; the odds of that card turning up are minimal according to poker room tips. Add to this that even if the 7 did turn, there is a strong chance that someone else would have the higher straight.

Another of the best poker room tips is to learn the value of the hands before you begin playing. Many poker sites offer lists of the hands and their values that you can print off and keep beside your computer. Educating yourself on the rules of the poker game is one of the best poker room tips there is. The old saying “knowledge is power” is very true when playing cards. If you learn what the odds are roughly of a set of two cards winning, then you have taken advantage of one of the great poker room tips.

Other Texas holdem poker tips include making people pay to see the next card, especially in an online poker room. If you bet before the flop and you have a decent set of cards, then your opponents who have poor hands cannot limp in to the hand. “Preventing people from limping in” means that you bet so that the players with bad hands will fold and this increases your odds of winning. The poker room tip of playing against 3 players instead of 10 is a good tip. Texas holdem poker tips commonly state that players who are allowed to simply check will do so while hoping to get a good hand. Poker room tips are filled with examples of this happening. For example, you may have a pair of jacks and another player has a 4, 7. The poker room tips say that you should bet because if you do not the other player may stay in the hand and make a straight or two pair. The poker room tips tell us that if you do bet, the other player will likely fold since a 4, 7 is a terrible starting hand.

One of the final poker room tips is to practice your game in an online poker room. Practicing the poker room tips that you have learned will dramatically improve your play in an online poker room. Texas holdem poker tips for face-to-face play also encourage practicing as mush as possible. Texas holdem poker tips tell us that this experience will let us learn how to play poker better and how to improve the flow of the game, whether you are playing in an online poker room or face-to-face.

Good advice for more than starting players
I really liked the “Online Poker Room Advice for Starting Players” article. I think it could benefit players who have been competing online to review some of the basics. I’ve been playing online for a few years and still have to remind myself of the basics. I guess some people aren’t embarrassed when they make a stupid move when playing online. But believe me, my cheeks have been so red I could see them reflected in my monitor. The worst is hurrying for the fold button and accidentally hittin

Don't be afraid to wait
This article offers some good practical advice regarding the patience needed to succeed in hold'em games. However, as most of already know, this is often easier said than done. Especially at lower level limit games and no-limit tournaments, no fold-em hold'em seems to be the name of the game. The old saying goes, any 2 will do. So if you're in a limit game and it seems like everyone is playing every pot -- and they will -- don't fall into the trap of the "when in Rome" philosophy. Play quality s
