Poker Rules: Texas Hold em

In This Page:

Texas Hold’em is sweeping the world and is arguably the most popular poker game of all time. It is a favorite among all players, low stakes to the biggest games in Vegas. Not to forget the myriad of tournaments offered in online poker rooms and offline poker rooms.

Hold’em is a card game played for high hand, as the game doesn’t play well high-low split. If you like games of the high-low variety, check out Omaha High-Low.

The Button and Blinds

Hold’em is generally played with 2-10 players. All betting begins to the dealers left. A white disk, also known as the ‘Button’, designates the game’s ‘Dealer’. The ‘Button’ is advanced around the table one poker player at a time after each hand is completed. The poker player seated to the to the immediate left of the ‘dealer’ is called the ‘Small Blind’ and makes a forced (mandatory) bet, which is commonly half the minimum bet at the table. The poker player seated to the left of the ‘Small Blind’ is called the ‘Big Blind’ and generally makes a forced bet the size of the minimum bet at the table, usually twice the size of the ‘Small Blind’ bet. Occasionally the game is also played with/and/or an ‘Ante’ which is a forced bet required of all the poker players at the table. The betting structure in this tutorial will reflect what is customary in Limit Texas Hold’em, the most commonly played version of the game.

The Hole Cards

The play begins with each Hold’em player being dealt two cards face down, starting with the Hold’em player to the left of the dealer button, also called the ‘Small Blind’. These down cards are called ‘Hole Cards’ and will not be revealed until the showdown at the end of the hand, if you are still in the Hold’em hand. You may use one, two, or none of your ‘Hole Cards’ to make your best hand. More about one, two, or none in awhile!

The Pre-Flop Betting

Now the first betting round takes place, it is also known as the ‘Pre-Flop’ betting round. The Hold’em player to bet first is said to be ‘Under the Gun’ and is the Hold’em player seated immediately to the left of the ‘Big Blind’. Whenever a poker player is first to bet he or she is referred to as ‘Under the Gun’. As a side note, player position is very important in Texas Hold’em. The Hold’em player betting last has a great deal more information than the Hold’em player betting first. The last Hold’em player to act (bet) has seen who has folded, who has called, and who has raised.

The Flop: Three Community Cards

The dealer now ‘Burns’ (discards) the top card from the deck face down. This is done between each turn of a community card ( cards that are turned face up and used by all players to make a hand ) for security, so no player has the possibility of getting a glimpse of the next community card. Now the dealer turns three cards up all at once, in front of him, in the center field of the poker table. These first three community cards are called the ‘Flop’. The ‘Flop’ is now followed by the second round of betting, beginning with the Hold’em player who is the first poker player remaining to the left of the dealer ‘Button’. This bet is generally in the same denomination as the ‘Big Blind’. Again, this Hold’em player is said to be ‘Under the Gun’. Moreover, don’t forget your position at the table, when it comes to you, your hand, and your bet (a.k.a.: your table action)!

The Turn: The Fourth Community Card AKA 4th Street

The dealer ‘Burns’ another card and places the ‘Turn’ card face up on the table’s field. The third round of betting begins. The bets in the third round are normally twice the size of the first two rounds, twice the size of the ‘Big Blind’. Of course this isn’t the case in Pot Limit games or No Limit games, however that betting structure is beyond the scope of this tutorial.

The River: The Fifth Community Card AKA 5th Street

Again, the dealer ‘Burns’ another card and places the ‘River’ card face up next to the ‘Flop’ cards and the’ Turn’ card. Now you have five community cards and the two in your ‘Hole Cards’ to make a hand. Look them over…this it! The fourth and last round of betting commences.

The Showdown: The Last Round Of Betting

That is all we get in Hold’em, two down cards and five face up community cards. With these cards we must make the best hand of five cards. We can do this using both of our ‘Hole Cards’ or one of them or occasionally none of them. The pots that are made using none of your ‘Hole Cards’ or your opponents are usually split pots ( you both have the same hand ). However, that is rare. So make sure you got the ‘Nuts’ (the absolute best hand possible) before you go ‘All-In’, or be ready to face the music. Good Luck!

Thanks Pokerschedule!
I started playing at Golden Palace about a week and a half ago after downloading the link from this site. It has been a wild ride ever since. When I first signed on I noticed their micro limit games. I don’t play micro games much, but it is nice to know they are there if I get down on my luck. I get very frustrated when I have a couple of bucks left in my account and can’t play it because it doesn’t meet the minimum at any of the tables or tournaments. They also have a low minimum deposit.
