A poker journal is a dairy of your poker play. Generally, over time, you can
learn about your play style by reviewing your poker journal entries and also
keep track of your profit and loss. Poker journals can be either as rudimentary
as a sheet of paper you write your game information onto or as deep as an
analytical piece of software that dissects your every move. Somewhere
in-between is where you should strive. You want at least a record of the game
you played, how long you played and profit/loss.
If you are learning to play poker or a seasoned professional, keeping a poker
journal is the best way you can ensure you don't forget how you played or what
you made at a table. As a beginner, you can plot your progress in both time
spent playing and poker winnings or losses. As you become a better poker
player, you'll find that your notes of how you played certain hands. If you
played them wrong, that information can be used to hone your game for the next
time you get into a similar situation. Hot water can turn pretty cool once you
are armed with knowledge. Poker journal entries are invaluable when it comes to
improving your poker play. When you pull down a big pot, it's nice to be able
to remember what you did right. The same holds true when you lose a big
one.without a log of your game play, you won't be able to recall how you
actually won or lost it. Also, when it comes to analyzing your play over a
stretch of time (months, quarters, etc), you can't find a better tool to use
than a poker game journal.
People can capture as much or as little data as they want to keep track of.
Most people capture information such as the blinds, bet structures, money won
or lost and game locations. It's also a good idea to capture some notes on good
and bad plays, players in the game.
There are both online and offline options to keeping your poker journal. Some
people use a spreadsheet software such as Excel or Lotus. Other options are to
keep a single written template page of notes, keep a scratch pad for recording
your game play or keeping an online poker journal. The advantage to an online
poker journal is offering friends and others to look at your play. Strike fear
into possible players who might find you. Entice others who think they can take
you down. However, make sure you can keep some information private.you don't
want to give away all your trade secrets.
