Comment: An advantage with practice

I can see why some people who play both have an advantage. I think you have to play both for a while before you can boast an advantage though. The first time I played poker in a casino poker room, I was surprised by how intimidated I was. I had been looking forward to the chance to sit down in a live game for weeks. I won a little over $100 on a slot machine and decided to take my winnings to the poker room at Palace Station. The attendant was very nice and explained how much, where, when, etc. I put my name on the list and walked around the casino while I waited to be called. After about fifteen minutes, I was called back to the poker room where I bought $100 of chips and headed off to the $5 table. I didn’t have to buy that many chips but it was the casino’s money anyway. I always thought I’d have an advantage at the live tables because I read people well, even online. I thought all the practice at online poker would come in handy, right? Wrong! Instead a click of the mouse, I was waving, tapping, throwing in chips (when I was lucky) and chucking my cards to the center of table (more often than not). My first move was to reach for my first card while the dealing was still dealing and sending someone else’s card flying. Fortunately, everyone was good humored about the re-deal, but I couldn’t have looked like an easier mark. That first day, I spent so much time worrying about the nuances of how to play the game; I forgot to even look at the other players. Needless to say I gave all those nice poker players the casino’s money.

Original Article: Online Poker vs. Offline Poker

If you have played in poker room games online and offline then you already know that there are vast differences in the way that you play the game. There are positive and negative aspects for both online and offline poker room games. A number of people play both online and offline. Let us look at some of the key differences in the two methods of playing.

The time factor is a major difference in online and offline poker room games. Playing in an online game can move very quickly. One reason that the online poker game moves so much quicker is that the computer and the poker sites are dealing the cards for you instead of a human. A human dealer takes time to collect the cards, shuffle, etc. which takes up time. Poker room games online also auto post the big and small blinds for the player most of the time. In a Texas holdem poker room or an Omaha poker room you are usually given a choice to have the computer automatically post the blinds or not. In my experience of playing in onlin...

An advantage with practice

Such different games
This is an important article because it drives home a very valid point. There really is no comparison between online poker and live cardroom play. The only similarity is the rules of the game (and the chip values, I suppose). Your article makes good points about the physical and mental differences in play.

personal take
I began playing in casinos and moved to online. When I came back to a casino after a substantial time playing online, I must admit I was thrown by how different it was. Personally I found the 'reading' skills I acquired on the net only managed to confuse me. It took a while of 'real play' to manage to combine the live and online skills.
