Comment: Good argument, but............

4 Flushed makes a good argument, and I agree with most of his points…. (If you are an experienced player and you are in it solely for the win) However, I believe it is a great place for beginners to start. While learning any game or sport, regardless of how many books you have read or games you have watched, you still need to get your feet wet and get a feel for what you are doing by participating. A beginner may not feel comfortable betting real money until they have a little more confidence in themselves. In addition, some players that I have talked to, play poker for the pure enjoyment of the game. They like the chatting and interaction with other players without the gamble. It’s more of a social event. And that’s ok.

Original Article: Why You SHOULDN'T Play Free Online Poker
By: 4 Flushed  On: 2/8/2006
While Jack's article on free online poker makes some valid points as to the virtues of playing for free, there’s one basic reason I say it’s a waste of time: it isn’t real practice, and bad practice doesn’t make perfect. In fact, it may do more harm than good.

Like Shaq working on free-throws in an empty gym; so long as the ball continues to spring from his oversized right mitt like a kid might fire a rock from a slingshot toward a bullseye, he’s not going to ever crack the 50 percent mark.

Unless you consider your time to be worth nothing, in which case I might still argue that time spent watching paint dry could be more productive and perhaps more entertainment than playing free online poker.

If you are a beginning poker player, I am certain free online play will do more harm than good. Because by being free, it is inherently a contradiction to the nature of the game. The game is one of skill and luck, those with more o...

I dunno...
I have to disagree with your statement that freeroll tournaments can do more harm than good. I think they are a great way for beginners to practice betting strategies (and to begin practicing the calculation of pot odds). While establishing BAD habits is always a bad thing, smart beginners can use freeroll tournaments as an effective tool to identify their common mistakes (and their good strategies as well).

Amen to that!
Agreed, agreed, agreed. Playing for free online is no different than playing for free online: when there is nothing at stake, it's difficult to learn. More specifically, there is no motivation to learn the pot odds and how to bet sensibly and with some kind of strategy. When you have nothing to lose, you have no motivation to think and play smartly. That being said, if you are in it simply for fun and to learn to feel your way around a poker table, then playing for free may be the answer, w

We the same on this
I'm glad someone agreed with me that freerolls are little more than scratch lottery tickets. The quality of play does improves measurably at even the lowest cash tables vs free tables, and the poor play exhibited in the early stages of most freerolls provides little in the way of beneficial poker education. Good article.
