Comment Posted: 02/12/2006 Well Said, Pam! Good reference to Moneymaker. Even better: Did you know there have been 4 major winners in WSOP events that have qualified online? I can't say for sure, but I'm betting that there are a lot of people who have qualified for WSOP events via Freerolls. Granted, sometimes early success at free or very low stakes poker can cause bad habits if you get too full of yourself and consider winning a free 2,000 entry holdem tourney anything like a $150 + $15 bounty tournament.

Comment Posted: 02/13/2006 Free rolls Interesting point of view I found myself at odds with at first. Personally I prefer to play for a tangible prize that I can spend. Although it is possible to win a seat into the big show, you probably have a better chance of making financial gains in poker from playing the money games well.

Comment Posted: 02/14/2006 Insightful. :) You've made some really great points here, and you did a good job of illustrating some of the perks of freeroll tournaments! Pointing out how often the pros play online is a great way to drive this issue home, and Moneymaker winning a seat at the WSoP is a great example. I think a lot of people will appreciate this article -- I know I did! |

Comment Posted: 02/14/2006 Play Money-Play Time Free is great for understanding the rudiments of a poker game, what is the button, who is the big blind. The game is poker and it is all about psychology. And ya know what? The psychology don’t get in the game until the money does! I don’t know ‘bout you, but I never learned nothing for free. |

Comment Posted: 02/15/2006 Nicely thought out This is a solid article, and your examples of how some of the more notable players got their start are true enough. I always have to take exception with the Moneymaker example because he did win at a $40 satellite, not a freeroll, but he did turn a low-level investment into a huge payday. Chris Ferguson is a better example certainly, given his early years of play via IRC before the internet caught up. A well-structured article here. |

Comment Posted: 02/16/2006 If only I’d known I wish I had read your article when I first started playing online poker. It might have saved me some hard earned money. I however, had to learn the hard way. While free online poker is a different animal than “real money” online poker, it certainly makes the learning curve a lot less expensive.
The idea of researching where to play is an excellent one as well. There are so many resources on the web to help players to decide where to play now. You mentioned player’s avatars at Full Tilt are e |

Comment Posted: 02/18/2006 Nobody ever made a career out of playing for free For those who want to make a career out of playing online poker, they are not going to make a living by playing for free. Sure, you hear of the occasional seat won in a major event through a freeroll, and the Average Joe cashing in a big payday, but people occasionally win the lottery, too. Doesn't mean you should play it with the expectation of winning. Essentially, that's what freerolls are. Lotteries. If you are serious about becoming a successful poker player, you must pay your dues, pun int |
