Comment: The difference between a bully and a bluffer

I really did “laugh out loud” at the last sentence. I guess I was laughing at myself because I’ve experienced the unhappy reveal more than once. Just when I think I have someone pegged and know I my full house is the best hand on the table, boom, they hit me out of left field with four of a kind. While I really hate when it happens, I probably deserve it because I love it so much when it happens in reverse! I think there’s a difference in a semi-bluff and bullying. A bully will bet big on a 2 7 unsuited before the flop and continue trying to out bet the table with no regard to the odds. Then there’s the player who is ridiculously lucky and continues to beat everyone at the table regardless of their hand. Some of it is luck, but you usually don’t find these players “all in” with a low, unsuited hand. The beauty of taking chances and winning at the beginning of a tournament is it becomes progressively easier to call other’s “all in” hands. One player’s 650 “all in” is a smaller gamble for a player with over 3000 chips. When a player’s chip count is far higher than the rest of the table’s, it’s good strategy to play more hands and bet aggressively. I don’t mind getting beat by the guy with a better hand and a better strategy. It’s getting beat by the guy who goes with “all in” before the flop with 2 7 unsuited and beats my pair of aces with 2 on the flop and a 7 on the river that irks me.

As the name suggests, these tournaments are indeed free. While that is undoubtedly preferable to you as a player, it does bring with it a myriad of factors to bring into consideration. Firstly, freeroll tournaments have an incomparably high number of players, mostly revolving around a 1000 give or take, depending on the poker room you have chosen. This means patience is crucial. So if you are accustomed to small hold-em tournaments or sit and gos, brace yourself – this is not a sprint, this is by all means a marathon. Furthermore, once you breathlessly reach that all coveted finish line you will probably be a bit let down by the reward, which usually does not exceed 20-30 dollars, and that’s if you’re lucky. On the other hand, if you are one of those people who take pride in a job well done, ...
