However, I believe it is a great place for beginners to start. While learning any game or sport, regardless of how many books you have read or games you have watched, you still need to get your feet wet and get a feel for what you are doing by participating. A beginner may not feel comfortable betting real money until they have a little more confidenc |

Comment Posted: 02/10/2006 I dunno... I have to disagree with your statement that freeroll tournaments can do more harm than good. I think they are a great way for beginners to practice betting strategies (and to begin practicing the calculation of pot odds). While establishing BAD habits is always a bad thing, smart beginners can use freeroll tournaments as an effective tool to identify their common mistakes (and their good strategies as well). |

Comment Posted: 02/16/2006 Amen to that! Agreed, agreed, agreed. Playing for free online is no different than playing for free online: when there is nothing at stake, it's difficult to learn. More specifically, there is no motivation to learn the pot odds and how to bet sensibly and with some kind of strategy. When you have nothing to lose, you have no motivation to think and play smartly.
That being said, if you are in it simply for fun and to learn to feel your way around a poker table, then playing for free may be the answer, w |

Comment Posted: 02/24/2006 We the same on this I'm glad someone agreed with me that freerolls are little more than scratch lottery tickets. The quality of play does improves measurably at even the lowest cash tables vs free tables, and the poor play exhibited in the early stages of most freerolls provides little in the way of beneficial poker education. Good article. |
